Few American interiors from this era show the scale of ambition that went into Pennsylvania Station's main waiting room, and this view from the entrance toward the concourse captures it well. The photograph was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely between about 1900 and 1915 documenting cities, landscapes and buildings. The station, designed by McKim, Mead & White and opened in 1910, was built for the Pennsylvania Railroad as a grand gateway to Manhattan, and its vaulted spaces were meant to rival the great public buildings of Rome. Look at the scale of the room against the figures of travelers, a reminder of how the building was meant to make rail passengers feel.
