The main concourse of Pennsylvania Station, the Manhattan rail terminal that opened in 1910, is the subject of this 8 by 10 inch glass transparency. The station was designed by McKim, Mead & White in the Beaux-Arts style, and its vast concourse, with high vaulted ceilings and rows of columns, was meant to recall ancient Roman public buildings. The station was demolished in the 1960s, so views like this one now record a building that no longer stands. The transparency carries the Detroit Publishing Co. number 30 X and reached the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
