Few interiors from the early twentieth century capture a public space as fully as this view of the main waiting room at Pennsylvania Station in New York. The station, designed by McKim, Mead & White, opened in 1910 as the Manhattan terminus of the Pennsylvania Railroad, and its vaulted hall, modeled loosely on the Baths of Caracalla, was among the largest and most admired rooms of its time. This 8 x 10 inch glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented American cities and railroads for promotional use in the years before the First World War.
