Few views of Pennsylvania Station capture its interior as plainly as this one, which turns the camera toward the track level and concourses rather than the grand facade on Seventh Avenue. The station opened in 1910 as the work of McKim, Mead & White, and its vast waiting rooms and stairways were designed to move crowds of commuters and long-distance travelers with a sense of order and light. Taken by the Detroit Publishing Company as an 8 x 10 inch glass negative sometime between 1905 and 1915, the picture preserves the building while it was new. Its wide view of the stairs and open floor shows the station's engineering ambitions and the scale of daily rail traffic in early twentieth-century Manhattan.
