Pennsylvania Station, the grand Beaux-Arts rail terminal that opened in 1910 on Seventh Avenue between 31st and 33rd Streets, is the subject of this c1920 photograph. The Pennsylvania Railroad commissioned McKim, Mead & White to design the building, and its Roman-inspired waiting room, with vaulted glass ceilings and granite columns, was among the most admired interiors in the city. Its demolition in the 1960s, which sparked a public outcry, later helped push New York to create its landmark preservation laws.
