Few buildings define early twentieth-century Manhattan as sharply as the Pennsylvania Railroad Station, the great Beaux-Arts terminal that opened on the block between Seventh and Eighth Avenues and 31st and 33rd Streets. This c1910 view comes from a Library of Congress caption card, and the record gives little beyond its subject and rough date, so it is best read as a glimpse of the station in its opening decade. The Pennsylvania Railroad built the terminal to bring trains into Manhattan through a tunnel under the Hudson, a feat of engineering that reshaped how the city moved travelers. Notice the scale of the facade and the crowds of the period, which show how central the station became to daily life in the city.
