Seventh Avenue at 31st Street was the public face of the Pennsylvania Railroad's Manhattan terminal, and this c1937 view by Irving Underhill documents the station the railroad had opened there in 1910. Designed by McKim, Mead & White, the granite and marble Beaux-Arts complex drew its great waiting room from the Baths of Caracalla in Rome. By the 1930s it handled a steady flow of commuters and long-distance travelers, and it was demolished in the early 1960s, a loss that helped prompt New York to create its landmarks preservation law.
