Taken from Sixth Avenue around 1912, this view shows the Pennsylvania Railroad Station only a couple of years after it opened in 1910. The Beaux-Arts terminal, designed by McKim, Mead & White, occupied two full blocks between 31st and 33rd Streets, and its construction required clearing a dense neighborhood and was tied to the railroad's tunnels under the Hudson River. Irving Underhill, the photographer credited in the record, copyrighted the image, which captures the building's monumental scale against the city streets. The station was demolished in the early 1960s, so pictures like this one now document a lost landmark.
