Few buildings in New York changed the character of their streets as much as the Pennsylvania Railroad Station, which rose on Seventh Avenue between 31st and 33rd Streets around 1910. McKim, Mead & White designed it in the Beaux-Arts style, with a grand waiting room modeled on the Baths of Caracalla in Rome and a long colonnade across its facade. Its scale and its place at the center of rail travel into Manhattan made it a symbol of the city's confidence. The station's demolition in 1963 sparked a preservation movement that helped protect landmarks across the city.
