Pennsylvania Station's main concourse was the centerpiece of McKim, Mead & White's 1910 terminal, a building that set the standard for grand rail architecture in America. This view, dated around 1911, shows the vast interior soon after the station opened to passengers, when its barrel-vaulted waiting room and colonnaded Corinthian columns still gleamed with fresh stone. The Pennsylvania Railroad built the complex as part of its tunnel and electrification project beneath the Hudson and Manhattan, so the concourse was designed to move crowds efficiently while impressing travelers. Its later demolition in the 1960s made photographs like this one a lasting record of the lost hall.
