Chatham Square, at the foot of the Bowery in lower Manhattan, was one of the busiest junctions of the city's elevated railways, and this view shows the station where the lines converged. The Manhattan elevated railroads were built in the 1870s and 1880s, and by the early 1900s their iron structures and steam-hauled trains had become a defining feature of the streetscape, casting shadows over crowded sidewalks and storefronts below. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced this photograph, sold views like it as postcards and lantern slides, so the scene also records how a working transit hub was packaged for a national audience.
