Schoolchildren gathered around several May poles in Central Park, a detail that ties this photograph to the spring festival of May Day. Maypole dancing, in which dancers hold ribbons attached to a tall pole and weave them into patterns, came to American schools from older European custom and was widely taught on playgrounds and in city parks in the early 1900s. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news photographs made mainly in the first decades of the twentieth century, though the caption card gives no date. It is worth noticing how the celebration turned an open public park into a setting for organized schoolroom play.
