Children crowd onto sleds in Central Park in this winter scene from about 1915, a snapshot of city kids using the park's slopes after a snowfall. It was made by Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied newspapers and magazines with news pictures in the early twentieth century. Sledding and coasting were long-standing winter pastimes in the park, and images like this one show how urban families enjoyed open green space in cold weather. The photograph is also a useful record of everyday street and park life in the years before World War I.
