Drawn near Central Park, this scene shows the makeshift dwellings of squatters who had settled on the land before the city's plans for the park displaced them. Daniel E. Wyand sketched the view for *Harper's Weekly*, where it ran in the June 26, 1869, issue on page 412. The magazine often used such engravings to show urban poverty to its middle-class readers, and the scene offers a close look at how the city's working poor lived at the edges of a rapidly growing metropolis.
