Ribbons fanning out from a tall pole in Central Park mark this as a May Day gathering, the kind of folk festival that drew crowds to New York's parks around the turn of the twentieth century. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its color views of American places, made the photograph, which survives as a transparency. The record dates it to about 1905, but that date comes from an old caption card and has not been independently verified. Maypole dancing was a popular way for schoolchildren and community groups to welcome spring.
