A May Day party makes its way into Central Park in this stereograph, a pair of nearly identical photographs meant to be viewed through a stereoscope as a single three-dimensional scene. The H.C. White Co. of North Bennington, Vermont, issued many such cards around 1907, when parlor viewers gave families a popular form of armchair travel. May Day was widely marked in the early twentieth century with processions, costumes and dancing, and parks made natural settings for these gatherings. The card carries a U.S. copyright notice, a sign of how publishers guarded their views.
