Curling, the Scottish game of sliding stones across ice toward a target, is the sport this engraving puts at the center of the scene, with members of the Caledonian and Thistle clubs playing on a frozen pond in Central Park. The park was still young in 1860 and only partly finished, and the presence of Scottish clubs on its ice shows how immigrant societies were bringing their traditions into new public grounds. The print ran in *Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper* in January 1860, based on a sketch by the paper's own artist and cut into wood for reproduction, which makes it a useful record of winter leisure in the city.
