Carriages are the focus of this view of The Lake in Central Park, a body of water in the park's northern woods, dated around 1905. Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux's landscape plan, begun in the late 1850s, was meant to give New Yorkers a retreat from the crowded city, and by the early 1900s the park's lakes and shaded paths drew riders and strollers who came to see and be seen. The picture is a glass dry plate negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers recorded American cities and scenery in the decades around 1900. Its record notes a gift to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949, a reminder of how these views traveled far from New York.
