This glass negative records the Lake in Central Park, the body of water Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux shaped as part of their 1858 park design. Its shoreline and the arched iron Bow Bridge were popular subjects for visitors of the period, and the plate's size, 8 by 10 inches, reflects the large-format cameras commercial photographers used for travel views. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued thousands of such scenes of American cities and landscapes, made the image between 1900 and 1915, when the park was a major attraction for New Yorkers and tourists alike.
