Goat carts were a familiar sight for children in Central Park during the early 1900s, and this glass negative captures that small pleasure on the park's paths. Central Park, laid out in the 1850s and 1860s by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, drew families from across the city, and rides pulled by goats were one of the cheaper treats on offer. The image comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that documented American towns, parks and landmarks around the turn of the century. Its glass plates, later donated to the Library of Congress, preserve a close look at everyday leisure in the city.
