This 8 by 10 inch glass negative shows the tennis courts in Central Park, one of the few views in the Detroit Publishing Company collection that records recreation inside the park rather than its landscapes or monuments. It dates to roughly 1900 to 1910, a period when lawn tennis had moved from private clubs into public parks and drew players from a broad range of city residents. The Detroit Publishing Company made large numbers of views of American cities and resorts for sale to the public, so the plate offers a useful glimpse of how leisure life in New York was documented at the time. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
