Skaters glide across the frozen water of Central Park in this glass-plate negative, one of the many scenes the Detroit Publishing Company made of the city's parks in the early 1900s. The company, based in Detroit, sold views like this to railroads, publishers and tourist trade, and its photographers often traveled with heavy large-format cameras to capture ordinary leisure in vivid detail. Winter skating on the park's lakes and ponds was a popular pastime for New Yorkers of every background, and the image offers a glimpse of that shared public life. The 8 by 10 inch plate preserves fine tonal detail that rewards close looking.
