Boys playing baseball on a Central Park playground give this view a lively, everyday focus, unlike the monuments and skylines more often photographed in New York. The picture is an 8 by 10 inch glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that traveled widely to document American places, and it was made sometime between 1900 and 1910. Those years saw cities building supervised play spaces for children crowded out of streets and tenements, so the scene reflects a turn-of-the-century effort to give city kids organized room to play.
