The record lists a bridge among its subjects, which points to one of the spans over the Lake in Central Park, a body of water shaped as part of the park's original design in the 1850s and 1860s. The glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that between about 1890 and 1924 photographed American cities, rivers, and resorts for travel promotion and sold the views as color prints. Pictures from this period show how carefully the park's landscape was arranged for strolling, boating, and quiet afternoon views.
