Few winter scenes from turn-of-the-century New York were as widely photographed as skaters on the ice of Central Park's lake, and this stereograph shows that pastime in the park. Issued by the American Stereoscopic Company around 1902, the card was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which fused two slightly offset photographs into one three-dimensional image. Stereo cards like this were sold in large numbers in the early 1900s and let viewers at home look closely at city parks and landmarks they might never visit.
