Donkeys were a familiar sight in Central Park during the first decade of the 1900s, when families and children paid small fees to ride them along the park's paths and bridle trails. This Detroit Publishing Company glass negative, made between 1900 and 1910, captures that everyday leisure in a park that had been laid out in the 1850s and 1860s as a retreat from the crowded city. The company's photographers traveled widely and sold their views to publishers and the public, so the scene offers a record of how New Yorkers spent their free afternoons before the automobile reshaped the park.
