This wood engraving shows workers lashing the stays, the diagonal cables that fan from the towers down to the roadway, as the Brooklyn Bridge neared completion. It was drawn from a sketch by a staff artist and ran in *Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper* on April 28, 1883, a few weeks before the bridge opened to traffic in May. The span was designed by John A. Roebling, who died in 1869 after an accident at the site, and it was finished under his son Washington Roebling, who directed the work from a sickroom after he was disabled by caisson disease. The picture captures the final, high-wire stage of a project that was then among the largest engineering efforts in the country.
