Taken from the Brooklyn Bridge, this stereograph looks out over the New York harbor and the city beyond, a view that made the span one of the most photographed sights of its day. The bridge opened in 1883 and was then the longest suspension bridge in the world, linking Brooklyn and Manhattan and drawing large crowds of walkers and sightseers. The card was issued by the Whiting View Company of Cincinnati, Ohio, around 1903. Like many firms of the period, it sold scenes like this for use in a stereoscope, which merged two slightly different side-by-side images into one view with depth.
