Men in prayer shawls and dark coats gather on a bridge walkway in this 1909 photograph, marking the Jewish New Year, which the caption gives as New Year's Day. The original caption named the Brooklyn Bridge, but a later identification by a researcher places the scene on the Williamsburg Bridge, which opened in 1903 and linked the crowded Lower East Side to Brooklyn. The Bain News Service, a wire photo agency, made the picture, and its negatives later entered the Library of Congress. Pictures like this one show how Jewish immigrant families carried their religious observance into the public spaces of their daily lives in New York.
