Among the ships crowding the waterfront here is the Antilia, which sits in the foreground while the Brooklyn Bridge stands beyond the piers along South Street. The bridge had opened in 1883, and by the turn of the century it was a familiar landmark above the East River, where carts and wagons moved goods to and from the ships. Made around 1901 by the Detroit Photographic Co., the view uses photochrom, a color process the firm employed for its scenes, and it was kept in an album that served as a catalog in the company's office.
