This print looks across the Brooklyn Bridge's elevated pedestrian promenade toward the Manhattan end, where the bridge's street railroad terminal gathered the lines that carried passengers onto the span. The bridge, completed in 1883 and designed by John A. Roebling and his son Washington Roebling, was among the first large steel-wire suspension bridges, and its separate levels for walkers, vehicles and trains were a novel arrangement for the period. The photograph dates from about 1898, when the bridge was already a busy link between the two cities. The caption details come from an unverified card, so the exact vantage point and date are worth checking against other sources.
