The Brooklyn Bridge, opened in 1883 and designed by John A. Roebling and completed under his son Washington Roebling, is the subject of this view, shown here together with the Brooklyn shoreline that the span joins to Manhattan. Photographs of the bridge were a staple of American views of New York by the late 1930s, when its Gothic stone towers and web of steel cables had become a symbol of the city. The record credits the photographer Irving Underhill, a New York commercial photographer, and the card's notes are unverified, so the exact date and vantage point should be treated with some caution.
