Few pictures in this gallery show the Brooklyn Bridge's pedestrian walkway as clearly as this stereograph, which captures strollers in the fashions of about 1897 and a policeman on foot among them. The bridge opened in 1883, and its elevated promenade was built to keep walkers apart from the carriages, wagons, and trolleys on the roadway below. Strohmeyer & Wyman, a New York firm that published stereo cards, issued views like this one for home viewers, so the card offers a glimpse of how the city's showpiece was presented to the public in the late 1890s.
