The Brooklyn Bridge was still a new sight when this wood engraving was made in 1883, the year the bridge opened to traffic on May 24. Designed by John A. Roebling and completed under his son Washington Roebling and later Emily Warren Roebling, it linked Manhattan and Brooklyn across the East River with a span that was then the longest suspension bridge in the world. Wood engravings of the period were a common way to bring such civic feats to newspaper and magazine readers, so the print shows the bridge as a symbol of American engineering and ambition as much as a view of a structure.
