Taken at 2 a.m. on February 12, 1908, this photograph shows boys at a side door of the Journal Building near the Brooklyn Bridge, just as the newspapers came off the presses and were being readied for the morning round. The caption gives their ages as 13 and up, and smoking is among the activities recorded in the scene. The picture is attributed to Lewis Hine, the photographer who documented child labor for the National Child Labor Committee, and it belongs to his series on street trades in New York. Its late-night timing makes it a useful record of the young workers who handled the city's papers while most residents slept.
