Two of the most prominent leaders of the American woman suffrage movement, Dr. Anna Howard Shaw and Mrs. Carrie Chapman Catt, stand at the start of this march as it begins. Shaw, a physician and minister, had led the National American Woman Suffrage Association until 1915, when Catt succeeded her as president. The picture dates from the 1910s, the final stretch of the New York campaign, which voters settled in November 1917 when the state approved women's suffrage, a major step toward the Nineteenth Amendment.
