This 1912 New York City procession shows suffragists using the street itself as a stage for their cause. The blind stamp from the American Press Association marks it as a commercial news photograph, made for distribution to newspapers and magazines, so it reached readers who never saw the march. New York women were pressing for the vote in a state that did not yet grant it, and parades like this one were a deliberate way to show organized numbers and challenge the notion that the cause was fringe. The picture is useful for seeing how the movement turned public spectacle into political argument.
