A giant papier-mâché or wooden loaf carried through the streets sets this picture apart from other views of New York's May 1, 1909 labor parade. The prop would have told onlookers at a glance which trade was marching. May Day had become a date for labor demonstrations in New York and other cities, and unions and socialist groups often turned out in large numbers. The photograph comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news pictures that Bain's agency supplied to newspapers in the early twentieth century, so it shows the event as the press of the day saw it.
