This 1910 print documents a May Day parade in New York City, and its caption tags point to women's rights as a theme of the march. May Day had long been a workers' holiday in the city, and by the 1900s it was often marked by socialist and labor groups with street processions. Those years also saw growing activism among working women and suffragists, who pressed for better conditions and the vote. The photograph comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news photographs taken for press use, so it captures a moment of public protest as newspapers of the day would have seen it.
