The trading floor of the New York Stock Exchange in the 1930s was a crowded, noisy arena where brokers and clerks worked in tight knots around the posts that marked each stock's trading post, shouting bids and slips of paper flying in every direction. This c1934 view captures that scene during an active session, only a few years after the Crash of 1929 had shaken public confidence in the market. Pictures of the floor from this period are valuable to historians because they show how much of the exchange's business still depended on physical paperwork and face-to-face shouting, long before electronic trading arrived.
