Few streets in Manhattan carried more financial weight in the 1910s than Broad Street, and this view shows the Consolidated Stock Exchange, a rival to the New York Stock Exchange on the same thoroughfare. Founded in the 1880s to trade securities that the larger house handled in lower volume, the Consolidated gave brokers and investors a second marketplace in the district. The photograph was registered for copyright by New York photographer Irving Underhill around 1915, and it records the building and its street at a time when the area was crowded with offices, brokerages and traffic.
