Drawn as a presentation view, this watercolor records the street facade of the Cotton Exchange in lower Manhattan as its architects hoped it would look. Hughson Hawley, a renderer of architectural drawings in the 1880s, painted it around 1883, while the building was still taking shape as a headquarters for the city's cotton trade. Cotton had long been traded in New York, and the exchange gave dealers a dignified meeting place. Worth noticing are the precise perspective lines and the soft washes of color that suggest the stone and ornament of the facade.
