A benefit staged by New York interior decorators at 5 East 48th Street, open for one week in May with admission set at 50 cents, is the event this poster announces. Its appeal is direct: every cent would go toward ambulances and trailers for "our boys at the front." The United States entered the war in April 1917, and civilian groups across the country raised money for ambulances before the army had fully equipped its own medical units. The poster is catalogued in the silhouette genre of the 1910s, and its missing pieces along the edges are a reminder of how many wartime posters were pasted up in public places and worn by weather and handling.
