Boys crouched in the dust of a New York City street to shoot marbles, a scene the caption ties to a hot day. Streets like this one served as playgrounds for children in crowded neighborhoods, where open lots were scarce and games spilled out of tenement doorways. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news photographs made in New York in the early 1900s, and its date range of 1908 to 1915 is an estimate taken from the original caption card, so the exact day remains uncertain.
