Few buildings on Fifth Avenue in 1868 drew as much notice as the new Temple Emanu-El at Forty-Third Street, the house of worship of one of the city's largest Jewish congregations. This wood engraving reproduces a photograph by Rockwood and appeared in *Harper's Weekly* on November 14, 1868, on page 729. Because newspapers and magazines could not yet print photographs directly, engravers like this one carved photographic views into blocks of wood so they could be printed alongside the text. The result shows the temple's large façade as the uptown avenue was filling with new houses and churches.
