St. Patrick's Cathedral, the Neo-Gothic church that rose on Fifth Avenue in the 1800s, has anchored midtown ever since. This stereograph, numbered 5631 and copyrighted by William H. Rau, shows the church from the avenue around 1904, when stereo cards let city residents see street scenes through a paired-lens viewer at home. Rau, a Philadelphia photographer, made many such views of American cities. The date and other details come from an unverified caption card.
