Set on Fifth Avenue at the edge of the city's growing residential district, this view shows the new St. Patrick's Cathedral, which replaced the older Catholic cathedral on Mott Street as the seat of the diocese. Designed by James Renwick Jr. in the Gothic Revival style, the marble church was built over the 1860s and 1870s and dedicated in 1879, its spires rising above a stretch of avenue that was filling with mansions. The record gives no date for the print, so its exact moment is uncertain, but it captures the cathedral in the years when it was a new landmark on the avenue.
