Fifth Avenue at Fifty-first Street shows a stretch of the avenue that by about 1900 was lined with the town houses of New York's wealthy families. The firm behind it, the Detroit Photographic Company (later the Detroit Publishing Company), held the American rights to the photochrom process, a costly method of building color prints from several hand-registered photographic plates. This example was made for an album the company assembled as a catalog for its own office, and its number, 53618, helps place it among the firm's city views.
