Fifth Avenue at Fifty-First Street lies a short walk from St. Patrick's Cathedral, which occupies the blocks between Fiftieth and Fifty-First Streets. Around 1900, this stretch was becoming one of the city's most fashionable addresses, lined with shops, clubs, and grand residences. The print is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland that the Detroit Publishing Company used to turn photographs into tinted images, which were sold widely as souvenirs of American cities.
