Crowds with torches gathered outside the Irving House, a hotel on lower Broadway, to serenade Louis Kossuth, the Hungarian leader who had fought for his country's independence in 1848 and 1849. Kossuth was staying at the hotel during his visit to New York in late 1851, when he drew enormous public enthusiasm across the United States. The wood engraving appeared in *Gleason's Pictorial Drawing-Room Companion* in December 1851, one of several illustrated weeklies that brought such civic spectacles to readers who could not attend them. The record's details come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
